Clinton Oliver Camper, the son of the late William David Camper, Sr. and Naomi Wright Camper, was born in Wetipquin, Maryland on July 12, 1934. He was one of five children to this union. Clinton received his education in the former Salisbury (Colored) High School, graduating in the Class of 1952. He attended Maryland State College, now the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Maryland. Clinton was united in holy matrimony to Dorothy Smith Camper in Clinton, South Carolina on December 27, 1967.
They enjoyed forty-three beautiful years of marriage. Clinton pursued many employment opportunities and held memberships in several organizations including: Wicomico County School Bus Contractor Association, Campbell Soup Co., owner and operator of Camper’s Trucking Co. and Lake Street 66 Service Station in Salisbury, MD. He was affiliated with Westside Activity Club, United States Bowling Conference; served as “Commander” and was a lifetime member of VFW No. 10159 in Salisbury. He served in the U.S. Army and the Korean War from 1955 to 1957.
Clinton became a member of Friendship United Methodist Church as a child and continued to serve in many capacities including the Starlight Gospel Singers and the Trustee Board. He had a very nice voice and loved to sing. He had a terrific sense of humor and was a big joker. He always kept people laughing with his comments or actions. Clinton loved people and did whatever he could to make them happy. He was very down to earth, kind-hearted and generous. Though very out-spoken, Clinton was a man of integrity and extremely wise. Clinton was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
Beautiful memories of his life will be cherished by: his devoted wife, Dorothy Smith Camper, Quantico, MD; one son, Clinton Rusteen (Felicia) Camper, Ashburn, VA; five daughters, Amelia Handy, Hebron, MD, Linette Camper Henri, Salisbury, MD, Annette (Charles) Maddox, Princess Anne, MD, Naomi Fontaine, Savannah, Georgia, and Yolanda Camper, Jonesboro, GA; one sister, Cynthia Fauntleroy, Greenbelt, MD; mother-in-law, Myrtle Smith, Clinton, SC; two surrogate daughters, Victoria (Charles) Jones, Quantico, MD, Melissa Moore, Salisbury, MD; two surrogate brothers, George (Edna) Davis, Toledo, Ohio and Adolph (Viola) Bivens, Princess Anne, MD; special sisters-in-law, Bernice G. Stallings, Jamaica, New York, Ethel M. Robinson, Philadelphia, PA, Dollie C. Wright, Salisbury, MD, Katherine A. Claiborne, Richmond, VA; god-son, Rev. Chappelle Stanford; a special “Pop-Pop,” Linwood Mitchell, Quantico, MD; fifteen grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; special neighbors, Winifred Dutton, Roger Birch, Jennifer Entwistle; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by one sister, M. Alma Perry, two brothers, Carroll Camper and William D. Camper II.
A service of remembrance will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Friendship United Methodist Church in Wetipquin, MD where friends may call two hours prior to the service at the church. Friends may also call Friday from 6-8 p.m at Holloway Funeral Home, 501 Snow Hill Rd., Salisbury, MD. The Rev. Lawrence Purnell is the officiating minister. Interment will follow in Friendship Church Cemetery.
