The Seldon Family

George Seldon was born December 1, 1836 in Hampton, Virginia. He enlisted in the Ninth Regiment of the United States Colored Troops June 15, 1863 at Hamlington Crossing and served in Company G in the United States Colored Voluntary Army during the Civil War. His rank was a private. The military described his personal description when he enlisted in the army as the following: five feet six inches tall, dark complexion with dark eyes and dark eyes. George Seldon received an honorable discharge at City Point December 1864. His occupation before entering the military was working in a tobacco factory in Virginia. He came to Maryland and was joined in holy matrimony to Matilda J Hull April 26, 1866 in Quantico, Maryland. She was born May 1844. Her parents were Sidney Hull and Mary Horsey Hull. For a while, they lived in Quantico and then moved to Wetipquin by 1880. The children of this family were Daniel Joseph Seldon, Mary Eliza Seldon, Minta (Minnie) Seldon, William Seldon, George Edward Seldon, Robert Seldon, Caleb Handy Seldon, Bertha Seldon, Wesley Seldon, Julia Seldon and Leuvina Seldon.

George Seldon was a local preacher in Friendship Church. April 11, 1917, George Seldon received a pension certificate because of an Act of May 11, 1912 from the federal government for his service in the Civil War.  The pension was reward to each veteran according to their age and length of duty in the military. He received a pension of thirty dollar a month.  George Seldon was 81 years of age when he received the pension. The certificate was signed & witnessed by his two daughters Bertha Seldon and Minta Seldon.  George Seldon passed away March 11, 1920 and His wife Matilda J Hull Seldon passed away June 3, 1927 in Wetipquin.

First Child. Daniel Joseph Johnson Seldon was born September 1863 in Quantico, Maryland. He married Mary Louisa Cook in 1889. She was born December 1866 in Sharptown, Maryland. Her parents were Stephen S Cook and Martha Jane Wright Cook. The children of this family were Theodice Seldon, George Albert Seldon, John Richard Seldon, Edith Seldon, Sarah Seldon, Eva Seldon, Enoch Pembrooke Seldon and Marella Seldon. His family and friends called him “Joe Seldon”.  Daniel Joseph Seldon passed away as result of an explosion at work along with one of his sons during World War II.

Theodice Seldon was born September 1884 in Wetipquin. Her husband was George Gladden. The children of this family were Gertrude Gladden and George Gladden Junior. They lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. George Albert Seldon was born November 20, 1886 in Wetipquin. His wife was Molly Dixon of Head Creek, Maryland. Their sons were Donald Seldon, Oswald Seldon, Harry Seldon and Denwood Seldon. George Albert Seldon passed away January 1970 in Philadelphia, Pa. Harry Seldon born April 2, 1912; he passed away December 1985. John Richard Seldon was born August 29, 1889 in Wetipquin. His wife was Lula Dixon of Head Creek, Maryland. She was born May 8, 1890. Their son was Linwood Seldon. He was born circa 1910 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Lula & Molly Dixon Seldon were sisters. Their mother was Georgia Dixon.

Sarah Seldon was born December 23, 1889 in Wetipquin. She passed away May 28, 1915 in Wetipquin. Edith Seldon was born September 1891 in Wetipquin. She married Charles Fletcher Dutton June 24, 1908 in Wetipquin. He was born April 1885 in Kings Creek of Somerset County, Maryland.  His parents were John Lee Dutton and Hester Jones Dutton of Wetipquin. The children of this family: Louise Esther Dutton, Lillie Bell Dutton, Alene Eva Dutton, Joseph Lee Dutton, Watson Stevenson Dutton, Charles Richard Dutton, Ruth Mae Dutton, Harvey Sidney Dutton, Florence Marella Dutton, Thomas C Dutton and Daniel David Dutton. Eva Seldon was born March 1895 in Wetipquin. She lived in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Enoch Pembrooke Seldon was born December 1897 in Wetipquin. He passed away in accident along with his father while at work during World War II. Marella Seldon was born circa 1902 in Wetipquin. Just like some of her siblings she lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Second Child. Robert Seldon was born circa 1869 in Quantico. Third Child. Mary Eliza Seldon was born April 1870 in Quantico, Maryland. Her first marriage was to Levin Thomas Lankford. He was born March 1862 in Wetipquin. His parents were Arnold Lankford and Mary Ann Wright Lankford. The children of this marriage were Georgia Emma Lankford and James Asbury Lankford. Her second marriage was to George Blay of Baltimore, Maryland. He was born June 1860. They were married circa 1897 in Baltimore, Maryland. They had one son Ferdinand Blay. He was born circa 1898 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Fourth Child. Minta (Minnie) Seldon was born March 1874 in Quantico, Maryland. She married Theodore (Dora) Bailey July 1, 1891 in Wetipquin. He was born January 1868 in Wetipquin. His parents were John Pembrooke Bailey and Adaline Allen Bailey. The children of this family were Herman George Bailey, Mary Ethel Bailey, Marian Bailey, Victoria Myrelia Bailey, Dora Cornelia Bailey and Sarah Bailey. Minta Seldon Bailey passed away March 1943 in Wetipquin and Her husband Theodore Bailey passed away March 9, 1944 in Salisbury, Maryland. They were buried on former Conway farm located on Royal Oak Road in Wetipquin.

Fifth Child. William Seldon was born in Wetipquin. He married Lula Brown April 28, 1896 in Tyaskin, Maryland. She was born February 1880 in Wetipquin. Her parents were James Brown and Hester Wainwright Brown. Their daughter was Virgie E Seldon. Virgie E Seldon was born in Wetipquin. She married Onley W. Turner of Nanticoke, Maryland October 13, 1915. The children of this marriage were Roland Turner, Marion Turner and Lula Turner.

Sixth Child. George Edward Seldon was born March 1877 in Wetipquin. He married Ina E Jones April 28, 1897 in Wetipquin. She was born circa 1880 in Wetipquin. Her Parents were William Jones and Mary Catherine Stanley Jones. The children of this marriage were Mary Vertie Seldon, William Handy Seldon, Charles Wesley Seldon, Shelton Brooks Seldon, George Edward Seldon Junior, Edna Seldon and Franklin Seldon. Edward Seldon passed away in 1954 and his wife Ina Jones Seldon passed away December 1949. They were buried in the Odd Fellows cemetery in Wetipquin.

Mary Vertie Seldon was born April 1898 in Wetipquin. She married Frank Howard Rellan March 20, 1917 in Wetipquin. Their daughter was Mary Alice Rellan Lennon. William Handy Seldon was born circa 1901 in Wetipquin. Everyone called him “Bud”.  He married Mattie Ella Moore July 30, 1923 in Wetipquin. She was born December 18, 1903 in Wetipquin.  Her parents were William Francis Moore and Elizabeth Joseph Moore. The children of this marriage were Bessie Seldon and Alvin Seldon. William Handy Seldon passed away September 28, 1979 in Salisbury, Maryland. His wife Mattie Moore Seldon passed away October 3, 1991. They were buried in Odd fellows cemetery in Wetipquin, Maryland.

Shelton Brooks Seldon was born circa 1904 in Wetipquin. His first wife was Grace Seldon.  She was born circa 1902 in Maryland.  There were no children from this union. His second marriage in 1938 was to Beulah R Moore. She was born April 21, 1921 in Wetipquin, Maryland. Her parents were William Francis Moore and Elizabeth Joseph Moore. The children of this marriage: Shelton Brooks Seldon Junior, Ronald Harold Seldon, Melvin Roy Seldon, Gloria Jean Seldon, David Scott Seldon and Gilda Renee Seldon. They also reared a granddaughter Chrystal Yvette Seldon. Shelton Brooks Seldon Senior passed away June 2, 1976 and his wife Beulah R Moore Seldon passed away February 2001. Both of them were buried in Green Acres in Salisbury, Maryland.

Charles Wesley Seldon was born circa 1903 in Wetipquin, Maryland. He married Rose Bunch of Norfolk, Virginia October 1, 1928 in Salisbury, Maryland. He was nicknamed “Honduck” by his family and friends. His wife was born circa 1908. The children of this family: Peggy Ann Seldon, Nathaniel Seldon, Robert Seldon and Richard Seldon. Charles Seldon remarried twice after he married Rose Bunch. One of his wives name was Beulah Mae Seldon. There were no children from the other marriages. Charles Wesley Seldon and his family lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

George Edward Seldon Junior was born circa 1906 in Wetipquin. His first marriage was to Louise Esther Seldon May 21, 1926. She was born circa 1908 in Wetipquin.  Her parents were Charles Fletcher Dutton and Edith Seldon Dutton. Their only son was Fletcher E Seldon. Fletcher E Seldon was born January 9, 1928 in Wetipquin, Maryland. He married Ruth Washington on July 9, 1959. The children of this marriage: Carolyn Barley Britton, Brenda Barley, Willa E Seldon, Earl Barley Junior, Scott Seldon and Mare Seldon. Fletcher and Ruth Seldon made their home in Huntsville, Alabama.

Written in his obituary was one of the most interesting characteristic of him told by his family and friends how he had the unusual capability which he demonstrated throughout his life “lifting” instead of “leaning”. How he was motivated by an intense and impelling preoccupation with improving, elevating, ennobling all that he touches and leaving it better than he found it. His parents recalled that he exhibited great qualities of independence and industry. He was a member of Lakeside United Methodist Church in Huntsville, Alabama. He was a Sunday school teacher, Chairman of the Administrative Board, Chairman of the Council on Ministries for both the local and district church, a pulpit assistant on intermittent occasion and as well as in nameless other services. He lifted himself up from a Private in the US Arm, which he joined when he was eighteen, to the rank of Captain at the time of his retirement in 1969.  He won the Bronze Star Medal, Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal and other commendations and honors during approximately thirty years of service in World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Viet Nam Campaign. He held positions with Model Cities, Public Systems, Inc., the National Aeronautical and Space Administration.  He served as consultant to the Commissioner of Education in HEW Region IV, to the International School Boards Association in Central America and to other school boards throughout America.

Fletcher Seldon joined the Huntsville School Board in 1971 and served as president and vice- president, he worked aggressively to improve the public school system in areas of personnel policies, teacher capabilities, student discipline, academic processes and implementing an effective program in school-community relations. He was a husband, a father, a neighbor, a Christian, a political activist and a community leader. Fletcher E Seldon passed away August 14, 1980. He received full military honors at his funeral. He was a man of great worth and respect in the place where he lived. Fletcher E Seldon was buried in Valhalla Memorial Gardens in Huntsville, Alabama. 

George Seldon’s second marriage was to Lena Mae Dutton May 25, 1929. She was born October 16, 1909 in Wetipquin. She passed away May 9, 2004 in Salisbury, Maryland and was buried in Spring Hill Memory Gardens in Hebron, Maryland. Her parents were Rufus Dutton and Mary L Cook Dutton of Wetipquin.  Their daughter is Jean Alice Seldon. George Edward Seldon Junior’s third marriage was to Beatrice Thelma Collins of White Haven, Maryland. She was born circa 1912. Her parents were Ervin and Sally Collins of White Haven, Maryland. The children of this marriage are Jacqueline Seldon and Denise Seldon.  George Edward and Beatrice Collins Seldon made their home in New York.  Beatrice Thelma Collins Seldon passed away December 1957 in New York and was buried in John Wesley Church cemetery in White Haven, Maryland. George Edward Seldon reared his daughters in New York after the death of his wife Beatrice Seldon. He worked on the Pennsylvania railroad until he retired and return to Wetipquin.  He renewed his membership and served as an usher in Friendship United Methodist Church. George Edward Seldon Junior passed away April 4, 1981 in Cambridge, Maryland and was buried in Green Acres in Salisbury, Maryland.

Edna Seldon was born circa 1913 in Wetipquin. Her first marriage was to Amos Waters of New Town, Maryland.  Her second marriage was to Henry Talley.  There were not any children from either marriage.  Edna and Henry Talley reared two nephews Christopher Seldon and Richard Seldon who were sons of Jacqueline and Denise Seldon. They lived Pennsylvania. Edna Seldon Talley passed away March 1992 in Pennsylvania. Franklin Seldon was born circa 1918 in Wetipquin, Maryland. There was not any more information concerning him.

Seventh Child. Wesley Seldon was born September 1879 in Wetipquin, Maryland. There was not any mention of him in other census records. Eighth child. Caleb Handy Seldon was born September 4, 1880 in Wetipquin, Maryland. He Married Beulah Moore March 26, 1900 in Wetipquin. She was born February 1885 in Quantico, Maryland.  Her parents were Samuel Henry Moore Senior and Minnie Dale Watson Moore.  The children of this marriage: Nathan Selden, Norwood Seldon, Phillip Seldon, Paul Seldon, Handy Seldon Junior, Minnie Seldon, Virginia Seldon, Beulah Seldon, Beatrice Seldon and Eleanor Seldon.  Handy Seldon and his wife Beulah Seldon made their home in St Michael, Maryland.  Caleb Handy Seldon passed away December 1966 in St Michael, Maryland. Beulah Moore Seldon passed away June 1967 in Wilmington, Delaware. They were buried in Lewis Conway family cemetery located on Wetipquin Road.

Ninth Child. Bertha Seldon was born circa 1882 in Wetipquin. She married Charles Henry Morris December 28, 1898 in Wetipquin, Maryland.  He was born April 1875 in Wetipquin.  His parents were Arnold Morris and Louisa Dashiell Morris of Wetipquin. The children of this marriage were Grace S Morris, Lessie McCall Morris, Sabra Morris, Louise Morris, Hester Morris, Otis Morris and George Morris. Bertha and Charles Morris were active members of Friendship United Methodist Church and the local lodges of the community. Bertha Seldon Morris passed away September 1963 in Wetipquin. Her husband Charles Henry Morris passed away March 1966 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  They were buried in Lewis Conway family cemetery.

Tenth Child. Julia Seldon was born July 1884 in Wetipquin, Maryland. She married Lewis G Conway July 19, 1900 in White Haven, Maryland.  He was born April 1880.  His parents were Lewis Isaac Conway and Mary Frances Whitney Conway.  The children of this family: Robert Conway, Preston Conway, Isaiah Fredrick Conway, Linwood Conway, Clifton Conway, Mary Rosa Conway and Lewis Conway Junior who resides in Texas. They also reared a nephew George Thomas. Julia Seldon Conway passed June 1959 in Wetipquin, Maryland. Her husband Lewis G Conway passed away December 12, 1956 in Wetipquin. They were buried in their family cemetery located on Wetipquin Road.

Eleven Child. Leuvina Seldon was born July 1887 in Wetipquin, Maryland. She married George H Brown December 16, 1908 in Wetipquin.  He was born June 1873 in Quantico, Maryland.  His parents were James Brown and Hester Wainwright Brown. The children of this marriage were Leonard Brown, Herman Monroe Brown, James Brown, Lewis Brown, Mae E Brown and Ralph Brown. George H Brown passed away December 1941 in Wetipquin. Leuvina Seldon Brown passed away September 1971 in Ocean City, New Jersey. They were buried in Lewis Conway family cemetery in Wetipquin.
