The Wilson Family

The Wilson family seems to be one of largest families in this area. There are many descendants that are still existing in most communities, towns and cities throughout the United States. Head A Creek was once part of Wetipquin. The landowners who received land grants and passed the property to their descendants once called the land the head of Wetipquin Creek leading to Green Hill. This area was in Somerset County until 1867 when Wicomico County was formed a few years after the Civil War.

Beginning in 1790, there was a census taken every ten years of all free persons in Somerset County, Maryland. In the 1820 census, a young woman named Leah Wilson was listed among the free blacks living in Somerset County, Maryland and the head of her household. Twelve years later, there was a special census taken of all the free blacks in every county in Maryland.  This 1832 census had a separate list of all free males and a list of all free females living in the counties. The following persons were in Leah Wilson’s household: Tracy Wilson, Jane Wilson, Betsy Wilson, Mary Wilson, James Wilson, Samuel Wilson and Benjamin Wilson. It was not until the 1850 census that members of the household was listed whether persons in the home was related or not.  In each census record taken there were gradually more persons listed as free persons. 1870 had the largest census records because of the end of slavery.  The 1880 census for the first time not only gave the names of the persons in the home, but the relationship of each person to the head of the household and their occupation.

In the 1850 census of the Tyaskin District of Somerset County, Maryland the following families of the Wilson family were listed. All of them were called Mulatto, which means a mixed race. In the first family was Jane Wilson age 36; Julia Wilson age 9; Amanda Wilson age 7; Charlotte Wilson age 4. The second family was Tracy Wilson age 40; James W. Wilson age 8; Rufus Wilson age 4; and Jane Wilson age 1. The third family was James Polk age 32; Betsy Wilson Polk age 30; Benjamin Polk age 3 and Samuel Polk four months. The fourth family was Leah Wilson age 65; Benjamin Wilson age 25; James Wilson age 30; Henry Wilson age 9 and Samuel Wilson age 27.

In 1860, Jane Wilson last name was Dashiell and there were two more additions to her family. Their names were Elizabeth Dashiell, Easter Dashiell and a young man named Rufus Dashiell. Leah Wilson and Tracy Wilson lived in another house together. There is no mention of the children who were in Tracy’s home in 1850. Betsy and her husband James Polk had six children- Mary Polk, Benjamin Polk, Samuel Polk, James Polk, John Polk and Martha Polk. Living in James Wilson house were his four children Wesley Wilson, George Wilson, Henrietta Wilson and James Wilson. His brother Benjamin’s wife Frances Wilson was also living with them with her four children- George Wilson, Mary Wilson, William Wilson and an infant unnamed.

1870, Mary Wilson and Betsy Polk were living together, perhaps Betsy’s husband had passed away, and there were two children in the household – Mary Polk age 6 and Ida Harris age 15. The research traces one of Betsy’s sons, James Polk to 1900. He was l5 years of age in 1870 living in another household. There is no mentioning of her other children until 1880. Benjamin Wilson, his wife Frances, his mother Leah Wilson and four children lived in his home. The children were Jane Wilson, Samuel Wilson, Hennie Wilson and Laurel Wilson.  Their oldest son, George Wilson and a daughter Mary Wilson were working and staying in other homes in the community. James Wilson and his son James, Jr. lived with a Goslee family. Samuel Wilson the second son of Leah Wilson was married to Mary Jane Evans. Her family called her Jane.   Their children were John Wilson and Samuel Wilson.  Also in the household was a ten-year-old child named Mary Conway.

By 1880, James Wilson’s daughter Henrietta Wilson had married John Goslee and they had four children. They were George Goslee, John Goslee, Charles Goslee and Caroline Goslee. Benjamin and France Wilson had six children. Their names were George Wilson, Mary W Wilson, Jane Wilson, Samuel Wilson, Hennie Wilson, and Alice Wilson. A young child named Robert Houston age 6 lived in the Household. Samuel and Jane Wilson had six children also.  Their names were John H Wilson, Samuel W Wilson, Nancy E. Wilson, Mary A Wilson, and Leah Wilson.  Nancy and Mary were twins. Families of Benjamin and James Polk were listed in 1880 census. They were sons of Betsy Wilson Polk.

There were two Benjamin Wilson families listed in the 1870 census. One man’s wife was named Sarah and the other man wife was named Frances. It is believed that these two families are unrelated living in the Tyaskin District. In fact, Sarah’s daughter Hester Wilson married Frances’ son George Wilson making all descendants of this couple related to both families. One family was free by 1820 while the other family does not appear in the census records until after slavery in 1870. This is the listing of the other Benjamin Wilson family in the 1870 census: Benjamin Wilson age 50, Sarah C. age 30, Joseph Anna age 15, Samuel age 12, Matilda age 7, Hester age 6. Louisa age 4, Tobias age 3, and John age l. In 1880 they had new additions to their family: James, Sarah and William. The Somerset County marriage records states that Benjamin Wilson and Sarah Conway were married July 26, 1859. Benjamin Wilson and his wife Sarah owned property in White Haven, Maryland found in the land records of Wicomico County Liber SPT2 Folio 193 and Liber TFJR 3Folio 7.

In 1900 Sarah Conway Wilson was a widow, she said that she had 14 children and five children were living. One of these men served in the United States Colored Volunteer troops during the Civil War. According to 1890 census of the Civil War Veterans, Benjamin Wilson of the Tyaskin District was in the Ninth Regiment Infantry of United States Colored Troops in Maryland, Company K, his rank was a Sergeant. The date of his enlistment was October 22, 1863. He served three years during the Civil War. His complete military records can be found at the National Archives in Washington DC.
