David E. Mitchell was born in Salisbury, Maryland on 03/02/1951, to the late James L. and Pearline (Taylor) Mitchell. He died Monday, 05/06/2024, at the age of 73 at the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus in Fairfax, Virginia. David attended the Wenaqua Elementary School, now known as the Westside Primary School in Quantico, Maryland.  He also attended the old Salisbury High School in Salisbury, Maryland. He was a 1969 graduate of James M. Bennett High School where he received recognition as an outstanding defensive player on the football team.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force 09/1970 and achieved the rank of Sergeant E4. He served in the Vietnam war and spent much of his time assigned to Okinawa, Japan, working as an aircraft mechanic on incoming and outgoing planes. David was also selected to play as a catcher on a traveling Air Force softball team. He was honorably discharged in 08/1974. Upon returning home, David earned an Associate of Arts degree from the Baltimore City Community College and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Baltimore in 1978. David also did post graduate work in accounting.

After graduation, David worked as a loan executive for a business loan institution for several years. He subsequently joined the Department of Treasury, IRS where he held increasingly responsible positions, including Supervisory Revenue Officer and Senior Tax Analyst. In 07/008, David received one of IRS‘s greatest recognition, the Commissioner’s Award for his work on the Wage and Investment Modernization Strategy and Program. He retired from the IRS after almost 33 years of federal service on 12/2011.

David is the father of three daughters and two granddaughters. His love for his daughters kept him active in the local community. He served as the president of the PTA during their elementary and middle school years. He also served as the president of the sports booster club during their high school years. He served as the president of the Liberty Road Recreational and Park Center and served as the coach of the Liberty Road girls basketball team. He coached young ladies from ages six through 15 who went on to play varsity basketball at several area high schools and colleges.

Of course, David took pride in teaching his own daughters to play basketball and supporting them during their high school basketball careers. He was also front and center to watch his granddaughters when they played sports and participated in other activities. David will tell you that his greatest achievement was serving as an assistant coach for Coach DeToiya McAliley at Milford Mill Academy during back-to-back state championship seasons and being “PopPop” to his granddaughters. David felt maintaining family ties was especially important and enjoyed spending time with his Wetipquin family during the Mitchell Family Reunion, Taylor Day, and Back Home Day.

David is survived by his wife Renée, three children, DeToiya (Lamont) McAliley, Baltimore, Maryland, Donielle, Los Angeles, CA, and Dyana, Woodbridge, VA, two granddaughters, Jasmine and Jada McAliley, Baltimore, Maryland, three brothers, Jerome (Josephine) Mitchell, Salisbury, Maryland, Ronald Mitchell, Silver Spring, Maryland, and Bryant Mitchell, Wetipquin, Maryland, four aunts, Christine Williams, Silver Spring, Maryland, Louise Taylor and Doretta Taylor, both from Salisbury, Maryland, and Victoria Jones, Wetipquin, Maryland, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
